StemWijzer (VoteMatch) is the most popular tool used by voters during election time. By responding to 30 statements with ‘agree’, ‘disagree’ or ‘no opinion’, voters can compare their own views with those of political parties. StemWijzer was first launched in 1989, and was developed by ProDemos – House for Democracy and the Rule of Law.

History

StemWijzer (VoteMatch) began in the Netherlands as a booklet: voters used 60 citations from election platforms and a scoring table to calculate for themselves which party they had most in common with. For the 1991 Provincial Council elections, the province of South Holland released StemWijzer on a floppy disk.

The internet played an increasing role in elections from 2002 onwards. That is when StemWijzer made a real breakthrough, and 2 million people completed it on election day.

In 2019 werd de StemWijzer ruim 1,6 miljoen keer geraadpleegd bij de verkiezing voor het Europees Parlement. Bij de Tweede Kamerverkiezing 2023 ruim 9,1 miljoen keer.

VoteMatch Europe

Bij de Europese verkiezingen maken we naast de StemWijzer ook VoteMatch Europe. Dat is een extra website waarop kiezers hun standpunten kunnen vergelijken met partijen in de hele Europese Unie.  

Na het invullen van de StemWijzer en het zien van je resultaten kun je ervoor kiezen om naar de VoteMatch website te gaan. Makers van stemhulpen in heel Europa hebben partijen deels dezelfde stellingen voorgelegd. Op de website van VoteMatch kunnen gebruikers daardoor net als in 2014 en 2019 zien met welke partijen in andere landen zij de beste match hebben. Meer informatie vind je op votematch.eu

About ProDemos

ProDemos is the ‘House for Democracy and the Rule of Law’. We provide information and education on the workings of democracy and the rule of law and show people what they themselves can do to exercise influence at various levels: in their municipal council, district water board, provincial council, country, or in the European Union.

ProDemos in The Hague

The ProDemos Visitor Centre is located directly opposite the Binnenhof (Houses of Parliament) in The Hague. We organise guided tours, educational programmes, courses and various public events. Each year we welcome tens of thousands of secondary school and university students, members of political organisations, tourists, and others interested in learning about politics, democracy and the rule of law.

The ProDemos Visitor Centre is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday (closed on holidays).

Throughout the Netherlands

ProDemos works with municipal councils, district water boards, provincial councils, courts, education institutions and civil-social organisations. Via our course programmes and class materials, guest teachers explain matters such as how to become a member of a local council, what provincial councils do, or how a court case is run.

For schools

For schools we offer political excursions, guest lectures, role-plays, and class materials on current affairs relating to democracy and the rule of law: a multitude of ways to make lessons practical and fun.

Research and information

ProDemos doet onderzoek naar onderwerpen als burgerschap, burgerschapsonderwijs en de rol van overheden bij burgerparticipatie. Ook onderzoekt ProDemos de impact en effectiviteit van haar eigen activiteiten. Verder bieden we verdiepende informatie over democratie en rechtsstaat voor een breed publiek, o.a. in de vorm van podcasts, cursussen en publicaties die vaak gratis te downloaden zijn. Voor internet maken we digitale tools zoals de StemWijzer.

Funding

Een deel van de inkomsten van ProDemos bestaat uit subsidie van het ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties en de Tweede Kamer der Staten-Generaal. Daarnaast ontvangt ProDemos voor afzonderlijke projecten subsidie van derden. Eigen inkomsten verwerven we door diensten aan te bieden aan gemeenten, provincies en andere opdrachtgevers. Omdat een deel van onze inkomsten afkomstig is van subsidie, kan ProDemos veel diensten kosteloos aanbieden.
ProDemos volgt de CAO Sociaal Werk. De cao-schalen gelden ook voor de directeur/bestuurder.
